Building a Focal Point

With no fireplace in this living room, it was in desperate need of some kind of focal point . Shelves would have worked well, as would a hutch or armoire, or even a very large piece of art.  But for this project our job was to use what was already in the house… nothing new.  None of the pieces alone would be big enough for this very tall wall, but in combination, they will work beautifully.

To start… a bamboo sofa table, the perfect base and grounding piece for the arrangement we are building above it.  The art and mirror go high on the wall, leaving room for other pieces to sit on the table.

Next, we kept layering art, leaning some of it on the table and against the wall. Accessories were added, providing color, texture and height.

One last layer under the table… 2 ottomans, ready to pull out and use for extra seating.

The final product… this wall has now become a beautiful focal point for the room!

The secret… layering.  Lots and lots of it, from high to low, front to back, and left to right… and all with items found around the house and in the garage. It’s always surprising, and rewarding, to see how great a room can look…. without spending a dime on new things!  Give it a try!!

Happy first day of spring! Yeaaaa.

The sun is shining, the temperature is rising and the garden beckons. I’m making plans and am thinking that this outdoor dresser, all planted up, is gonna be one of my first projects…  I’m obsessed!!

Dresser-turned-succulent-garden! From Curbly

Do you agree that this is BRILLIANT!?  Found, on Pinterest… at 2:30 this morning. (Some of the best ideas appear in the middle of the night!)

Are you as crazy to get going in the garden as I am?

More Plants for More Places

You heard about my love affair with plants last week.  Especially succulents. I’ve got them indoors, I’ve got them outdoors, but had never thought of putting them here:

so cute

Maybe getting a bicycle IS a good idea… I’m feeling vibrant and pink cheeked just thinking about it! (Do you think this could work on a motorcycle??)

All of these CUTE little containers, above and below, come from Colleen Jordan of Wearable Garden.  You can see them in her Etsy shop here.

No bike?  Try out her wearable containers: necklaces, brooches and lapel pins designed to hold succulents, air plants or tiny sprouts and flowers. (wonderful air purifiers, of course!)

And then there are these plant containers… Why, who needs a trip to the pottery shop when there are household items just waiting to be filled with green goodness? Just open the closet, potting shed or, well… even your dresser drawers.

My favorite, although I think that Mr. MM would prefer that I wear this one…!

spilling out…!

What kinds of containers have you planted up?
